Back in 2011, just after Cats Ahoy! was published I had a meeting with the lovely Emma Layfield at Hodder Children's Publication who had seen Cats Ahoy! and spotted a little frog illustration I had on my website at the time. She had Kes Gray's Oi Frog! manuscript in her hand and was keen for me to develop some character concepts for it.

So very excited at the prospect of this book, I went to my desk and worked up some characters . These are the very initial sketches I made of the cat and frog and also of the lion and hare.

The cat developed as the booked progressed.

The image below was another colour concept which you might recognise. Hodder fell in love with this concept and as a result it ended up being the book cover. This has never happened before or after to me.
